Discover your body´s natural balance

Prepared by: Gary Samuelson, Ph.D. Robertson D. Ward, M.D., FAAFP David Carpenter, N.D., C.Ac., C.C.I.

The North Carolina Research Campus, and the Appalachian State University Human Performance Laboratory, under the direction of Dr. David Nieman’s world renowned team of scientists, uncovered new findings proving that the consumption of ASEA empowers humans to shift the availability of free fatty acids. These calorie sources represent a more favorable and efficient source of fuel for exercise and all daily life activity.

Facts about Our Metabolism

Cells inside our body breathe! The processes of metabolism at a cellular level involves the consumption of molecular oxygen and large molecule energy sources (sugar, glycogen, fatty acids, and amino acids). Through the process of oxidative phosphorylation (cellular respiration…breathing!) the cells create energy (ATP). The mitochondria in our cells do this work, and this is where Redox Signaling molecules are created.

Metabolism and Athletes

We understand that our cells always strive to run at the greatest efficiency possible. Through the conditioning of our bodies, our cells learn to use certain fuel sources preferentially. We are all familiar with the fatigue and pain that happens after rigorously exercising out-of-shape muscle groups. This happens because the muscle exhausts the standard glycogen source for fuel and then shifts to anaerobic metabolism (using fuel without oxygen), which forms lactic acid metabolites. But trained distance runners have conditioned their bodies to utilize a different fuel source: fatty acids (which are 6 times more energy-providing than other sources). By using fatty acids, these athletes preserve their muscle glycogen stores for strenuous bursts, like at the end of races, and that means greater endurance.
This is important. Endurance athletes actually condition their bodies to use fatty acids as a preferred fuel source, sparing muscle glycogen and increasing endurance.

Specific Metabolite Research Findings with ASEA:

The astonishing results of this randomized, double-blinded, crossover, placebo-based research showed that after one week of drinking 4 ounces of ASEA daily, the test subjects demonstrated a shift in 43 of 108 metabolites measured from the blood sample. These shifts were revealed using ultra-sensitive mass-spectroscopic measurement techniques. These shifts were so great that it was thought that there might be a software anomaly and scientists requested a manual inspection to verify data.
The largest metabolite shifts were in serum fatty acids. Again, these shifts happened after one week of consumption and before any athletic activity. Fatty acids are typically mobilized from abdominal body fat stores. They included myristic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, stearic acid, palmitelaidic acid, and capric acid. Don’t let the “acid” part throw you off; these are sources of fuel for the human body.
The chemical markers of these fatty acids are called “metabolites,” and their various concentrations in our blood represent a fingerprint of our metabolic balance. The metabolite shifts found due to ASEA ingestion are profound and very beneficial to health, since these shifts mimic what the body does when seeking fuel efficiency; that is, using fatty acids as a preferred fuel source and sparing muscle glycogen.
These important metabolite changes have resulted in applications for new patents for ASEA, and have prompted further studies at the North Carolina Research Campus. Additionally, all of these changes occurred without any evidence of toxicity whatsoever on any basic organ functions in liver and kidney tissue.

Conclusions

These initial results from a larger study on athletic performance have demonstrated that ASEA, which is composed of Redox Signaling molecules, has a profound impact on mobilization of fatty acids as they aid with efficiency in cellular respiration. This favorable pattern of increased availability of fatty acids for fuel consumption represents a foundational shift in our metabolic fingerprint – a shift toward more effective patterns of fuel usage and energy output.

Redox Signaling Moleculs Science

What are Redox Signaling molecules?

Reactive Oxygen Species and Reduced Species Our cells are literally filled with and surrounded by salt water, which becomes the principal raw material for building simple redox signaling molecules. Simple Redox Signaling molecules are simple molecules formed from rearrangements of the atoms in water (H20) salt (NaCl) and nitrogen (N2), the most abundant molecules of life. A few examples of simple redox signaling molecules are hydrogensuperoxide (HO2), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and Nitric Oxide (NO), there are many more. Redox Signaling molecules can fall into two classifications, Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Reduced Species (RS). When isolated, most of the individual Redox Signaling molecules are potently toxic, reactive and unstable. However, in all forms of life on planet earth, cells have learned to manufacture stable, non-toxic mixtures of ROS and RS that serve fundamental roles inside and outside the cells.

Perfectly pH balanced (7.35)

Mixture In our blood, cells and tissues, perfectly balanced, stable safe mixtures of Redox Signaling molecules exist. It turns out that such mixtures have close to neutral pH (7.35) which is the average pH of blood and fluids carefully maintained in our bodies. It should be noted that such stable balanced mixtures of Redox Signaling molecules CANNOT be formed by simply stirring together individual components (which would be toxic and imbalanced), non-toxic Redox Signaling complexes are formed electrochemically and enzymatically by complex reactions inside the cells and tissues. The perfectly balanced complex mixtures of ROS and RS of Redox Signaling mixtures in the body, naturally having close to neutral pH and neutral Redox potential (RP), can balance chemical equilibrium as required depending on the chemical environment they are in. This is the beauty of Redox Signaling messengers, they are everywhere and participate in all of the processes of life.

Species containing chlorine

Some of the Redox Signaling complexes in our body contain chlorine. This is not the same form as the unbalanced crude forms of molecular chlorine and bleach (Cl2, NaOCl) that are used to sanitize pools and water supplies. Such unbalanced forms of chlorine are notably irritating and toxic, though still tolerated. In fact, certain unbalanced mixtures are the primary weapon of choice for the immune system and are potently effective against microbes. Perfectly balanced Redox Signaling mixtures, in contrast, have zero toxicity are not irritating, even soothing, and are safe for all tissues in the body, including the eyes. These balanced mixtures of Redox Signaling molecules already exist in large concentrations in all tissues and fluids in the body and are able to be easily handled by all tissues. The secret is balance.

Produced by Mitochondria

The primary source of Redox Signaling molecules in living cells is the mitochondria. The mitochondria live inside the cells and produce 95% of all of the energy (ATP fuel) used in the body. There are anywhere from 10 to 5000 mitochondria in every cell. Collectively these organelles comprise more than half of the dry weight of the body. As mitochondria metabolize simple sugars from the foods we eat into the ATP cell fuel, they also produce copious amounts of ROS and RS that are quickly mixed, stabilized and balanced by enzymatic action inside the cells to form balanced Redox Signaling complexes and mixtures. These balanced Redox Signaling mixtures float around the cell and are easily neutralized by the antioxidant barriers that are placed in strategic areas in the cell to protect sensitive structures from potential damage, such as the DNA. As long as these Redox Signaling mixtures are kept balanced, the antioxidant barriers are easily able to neutralize them, by turning them back into salt water and nascent oxygen. Such Redox Signaling molecules serve as signaling messengers and carriers in all cells and tissues of the body.

ASEA for Athletes

Athletic Performance – The ASEA Advantage

The Need For More

It’s no secret to athletes that even a small increase in their ability to perform or recover can make a significant difference in achieving their goals. Conditioned athletes typically have the increased need for enhanced nutrition, improved recovery support and the ability to maintain a healthy chemical balance inside cells, all because of the stress they put on their bodies.
While improved diet and specialized training certainly help improve performance, the challenges of strenuous physical activity mean that athletes need more.

The ASEA Advantage

ASEA, the original and only Redox Signaling product available today, provides the body with two perfectly balanced sets of reactive molecules – the same molecules produced naturally by the mitochondria in every cell of the human body. These vitally important molecules support the production of the ATP energy that fuels out cells, help activate antioxidants, minimize cellular damage, enhance cellular communication and speed the healing response – all functions critical to athletic performance, endurance and recovery.

ASEA – Proven to Enhance Physical Performance

ASEA is the first and only stable, perfectly balanced mixture of these reactive molecules that exists outside the body, a breakthrough in athletic performance once thought impossible.
ASEA is as safe as any product on earth. The company has spent millions of dollars in numerous studies and testing to establish that ASEA is extremely safe for all users. In addition, these studies have yielded impressive results that excite the world of athletics. Two studies in particular, stand out for their findings:

ASEA Study #1

In an independent laboratory trail, after only two weeks of ASEA supplementation, the athletes experienced a large increase in their VT (ventilatory threshold – the time it takes to hit the ‘runners wall’), increasing their running distance before encountering their VT by an average of more than 12%. In fact, some athletes increased their power output and endurance over 30%!

ASEA Study #2

A 2012 double-blind, cross-over study from researchers at Appalachian State University measured the influence of ASEA on small molecules (called metabolites) that shift in response to supplementation. The findings were extremely promising:
  • There was a ‘massive’ free fatty acid mobilization PRIOR to exercise, to levels normally found only after heavy exercise
  • This mobilization should allow athletes to maintain performance levels longer
  • Fatty acid release is coming from fatty adipose – the body’s largets energy reserve
  • Muscle glycogen stores are likely spared as a result of fatty acid mobilization, giving athletes a reserve of energy when they need it

5 Reasons Athletes Should Use ASEA:

  1. Scientifically Supported. ASEA s based on more than 16 years of research, making it a safe and natural way to help your body function as it should. Additional trials have proven its ability to improve athletic performance in various ways.
  2. Boost Energy. By supporting overall cellular health, ASEA can enhance the metabolic processes that produce energy for the body. For instance, ASEA appears to quickly mobilize the body’s fatty acid reserves while sparing glycogen stores.
  3. Superior Antioxidant Protection. ASEA accelerates the production of the body’s own antioxidants, including glutathione, SOD and catalase. It also increases the effectiveness of these antioxidants by over 500%.
  4. Athletes Approve. Literally thousands of athletes have reported that ASEA has a wide array of benefits – shortened recovery times, more energy, less soreness, increased VT (ventilatory threshold) and endurance, and overall better performance.
  5. Comprehensive Support. ASEA provides comprehensive support for athletes in 6 key areas; Power, Strength, Endurance, Energy, Mental Function and Recovery.

The Health Benefits Of Glutathione

health benefits glutathione
Glutathione is known as the "Master Antioxidant." Without antioxidants, nature's free radicals would cause endless damage to our bodies and living healthy would be quite difficult. Fortunately, we have a built in system of antioxidant power that when operating optimally, the dreaded effects of aging can be thwarted and youth preserved.

Glutathione is revered because of it's amazing power over free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules in our body that cause damage to our tissue and organs because of their irradic behavior. Glutathione, like other antioxidants, grab on to the unruly free radical and remove an electron, the bad influence on the free radical, and render it harmless. Glutathione is our most abundant antioxidant found in our cells and livers, and even stored in our protein. Science has observed that when there is marked illness, glutathione levels plummet. It is crucial to maintain adequate levels of glutathione, especially for those with chronic disease and autoimmune conditions.  Those with autoimmune conditions are often low in gluathione levels.

Key Points About Glutathione

  • benefits glutathioneLow levels of glutathione are a harbinger for illness and premature death
  • It is the primary water-soluble antioxidant and able to restore Vitamin C to it's usable form
  • Glutathione levels are boosted by lipoic acid (another antioxidant)
  • Glutathione is crucial for the detoxification of drugs and other pollutants, and for the health of the liver
  • Glutathione is key to a strong immune system
  • Glutathione assists in the storage and transport of amino acids, our building blocks for proteins
  • The best way to boost glutathione levels is to take 100 mg. of alpha lipoic acid daily

Sources and Supplementation

Glutathione is abundant in many fruits, vegetables and fresh cooked meats. However, the digestive process breaks it down. It is believed that the molecule of glutathione is too large to pass through the digestive tract, allowing only small amounts to be absorbed into the body. For this reason, oral glutathione supplementation is not recommended. There are topical creams that do deliver a beneficial dosage of glutathione when applied to vascular areas of the body.
One of the best ways to boost glutathione levels is to supplement with nutrients that assist the body in recycling already used glutathione. As mentioned, glutathione takes an electron from a free radical to calm it down. Once it has accepted that electron, it is no longer able to perform again unless the body recycles it. Fortunately for us, many of our antioxidants work in tandem. Alpha lipoic acid works well with glutathione. ALA is easily absorbed in supplements and it partners with glutathione to restore its antioxidant power. The amino acid N-Acetyl Cysteine is also able to boost glutathione levels, but not nearly as efficiently as ALA. Supplements with ALA and NAC work well at boosting our miracle antioxidant.
Lifestyle choices like smoking and eating too many nitrate laden foods (i.e., luncheon meats) can work against your glutathione levels. Alcohol consumption also robs our stores of glutathione in our liver. If you are concerned about cancer and inflammation in the body, work heartily at keeping your glutathione levels in check.
You've probably heard that free radicals are a big part of the human's aging process. Gluathione is probably nutrition's greatest defense against the battle of aging and loss of vitality. A diet high in the other key antioxidants that work with glutathione, like Vitamin C and E, and alpha lipoic acid, as well as a simple supplementation with a glutathione recycling supplement can ensure a healthier more respectable aging process.

Detoxification and Free Radical Damage in Autoimmune Diseases

The problems in autoimmune conditions run much deeper than a messed up immune system, wiped out enzymes, oxygen depleted cells and pathogens making a comfortable home in your guts. When your liver can’t effectively detoxify your body because its enzymes have been wiped out, toxins build up in your cells. Especially so if mycoplasma are also producing toxins in them. So toxinsbuild up in them. This toxic buildup causes much damage. Damage that can persist even if theautoimmune response is turned off.
Dr. Cheney explains that once the toxicity begins, the toxins themselves inhibit and injure the very enzymes needed to detoxify them. Plus, the cells’ principle detoxification agent and a major viral inhibitor, glutathione, gets used up early on. Making it difficult for cells to detoxify, and inhibiting their ability to kill the pathogens infecting them.

Glutathione deficiency has been found to be virtually universal in autoimmune diseases. This deficiency has two major implications: detox failure andviral/microbial activation. Glutathione plays a major role in detoxification. This deficiency impairs thebody’s ability to get rid of toxins.Consequently, people slowly become toxic, storing away poisons in fatty tissue, muscles, organs andthe brain. This cellular detox failure can make people canaries to their environment. To detoxify successfully, this glutathione deficiency must be addressed.
Because glutathione is a potent antiviral and anti-microbial weapon, glutathione deficiency compromises antiviral and anti-microbial defenses, and actually stimulates viral replication. Raising glutathione levels inside the cells can stop the replication of almost any pathogen.
A glutathione deficiency compromises our ability to keep old viruses dormant and fight off bacteria. This is why so many people test positive for EBV, CMV, HHV6, Mycoplasma, and ChlamydiaPneumoniae, etc. Indications are that glutathione can stop the replication of any intracellular microbe, including HHV6, Chlamydia Pneumoniae, and mycoplasma. Dr. Cheney found that some of his patients were becoming virus free after using a glutathione-creating undenatured whey protein for approximately 6 months. Showing that the increased levels of glutathione were indeed able to handle the viral infections.
There has been a good deal of research that shows how important glutathione is. Immune depressed individuals have lower glutathione levels when fighting disease. Lymphocytes, cells vital for your immune response, depend on glutathione for their proper function and replication. Immunology 61: 503-508 1987.

Cellular depletion of Glutathione has been implicated as a causative, or contributory factor in many pathologies including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, cataracts, arteriosclerosis, cystic fibrosis, malnutrition, aging, and AIDS (Bounous et al., 1991).

In addition, Glutathione is essential in supporting the immune system, including natural killer cells (Droege et al., 1997) and in the maintenance of T-lymphocytes (Gutman, 1998). It is known that as we age, there is a precipitous drop in glutathione levels. Lower Glutathione levels are implicated in many diseases associated with aging, including Cataracts, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's, atherosclerosis and others. Journal of Clinical Epidemiology 47: 1021-28 1994

Antioxidants are well documented to play vital roles in health maintenance and disease prevention. Glutathione is our cell's own major antioxidant. Why not use what is natural? Biochemical Pharmacology 47:2113-2123 1994

Low glutathione has been demonstrated in neurodegenerative diseases such as MS (Multiple Sclerosis), ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's, among others. The Lancet 344: 796-798 1994

Glutathione detoxifies many pollutants, carcinogens and poisons, including many in fuel exhaust and cigarette smoke. It retards damage from radiation such as seen with loss of the ozone. Annual Review of Biochemistry 52 : 711-780 1983.

The liver is the main detoxification organ of the body. In the liver we find very high concentrations of glutathione, as it is a major factor in numerous biochemical detoxification pathways. Numerous studies have demonstrated that patients with compromised liver function due to alcohol abuse have significant reduction of glutathione in the liver. (Lamestro, 1995)

Glutathione is essential for the maintenance of Vitamin C and vitamin E levels according to Mrtensson. He found that as glutathione levels decreased, a corresponding decrease in ascorbic acid and vitamin E followed, which led to systematic mitochondrial death, which in turn leads to a cessation of cellular metabolism.

(It is this mitochondrial death, at first just a dysfunction, that may cause the fatigue found in autoimmune illnesses.) The over-toxicity causes extensive free radical damage. Inhibits cellular function. Disrupts energy production by the mitochondria. Consequently the primary energy the cells produce is anaerobic which leads to extensive lactic acid buildup in the cells. And more toxicity.
Cheney explains that fatigue becomes worse. Pain increases. You feel sicker. Memory suffers as the brain is damaged by toxins and free radicals, and not enough oxygen gets into the brain. Deep brain structures like the hypothalamus eventually are injured and cause problems with virtually every hormone in your body. They lose their ability to rise and fall according to signals or demands from the body making it harder to respond to changing situations. Actual damage to the DNA of the energy producing mitochondria can occur. Further limiting energy.
As toxins cause free radical damage, you end up with low levels of all the free radical scavengers. They get used up dealing with excessive free radicals produced by the excessive toxins.

Glutathione - Vital for Detoxification and Antioxidant Protection

Dr. Cheney found that giving glutathione as a supplement, even by injection, was not successful in raising glutathione levels in the cells. Where 90% of it is used. He found the best way to raise cellular glutathione levels was to use an undenatured whey product.

Glutathione is naturally found in all the cells of mammals. It provides the principal intracellular defense against oxidative stresses. It is the major cellular antioxidant, detoxifier, and the cell’s most powerful virus and pathogen killer too.
